HOW THE GUARDIAN HELPED CLOSE THE FIRST
MULTICULTURAL COLLEGE IN BRITAIN

Bilston Community College was the first Multicultural college in Britain.

• It had 30% multicultural staff - far more than any other before or since.
• The number of ethnic minority pupils studying at W'ton College in 2002 was little more than half those who studied at Bilston College in 1997.
• The College was closed by an assortment of racists, conservatives, educational elitists, snobs, institutional racists, and some mistaken people.

PETER KINGSTON, the Guardian Educational Correspondent shares the blame.
He believed Bilston was one of a group of 'rogue'colleges that had defrauded the government of millons by misuse of educational funds and when the FRIENDS were set up to defend the college he decided that nothing of their case should appear in the paper.

The Editor ALAN RUSBRIDGER played the Pharisee by claiming that weekly GUARDIAN EDUCATION was contracted out and he had no control over what appeared in his paper!

So we then tackled all the progressive reporters on the paper who one would expect to jump at a case involving false accusations and institutional racism. No takers except POLLY TOYNBEE who asked to be kept informed and then went off on a sabbatical.

So I then wrote to FRANCIS BECKETT with whom I had in common that we had both written of the post first World War Ex-Services Movement, his father having been first a leading militant who then defected to become the second most important fascist to Oswald Mosley.
Francis was a progressive. We offered him an investigative story that would run and run. Three epochs of educational practice - straightforward elitist - Thatcherite free market help yourself to whatever you can get - attempts to tackle multicultural education. Also Bilston Community College's innovations applied not only to education but to every other field of building a multicultural society. We heard nothing from him. The story still runs.
